Focus on people

International Cleaners Day, on Thursday 15 June, is a special opportunity to recognise the remarkable efforts of more than 1,500 cleaners working for HealthShare NSW.

The work our cleaners do in Patient Support Services is paramount to ensuring the safety and well-being of NSW Health facilities. Their contributions play a critical role in upholding the standards of care within our healthcare system.

“Our cleaners do an amazing job behind the scenes keeping our hospitals safe and clean,” said Anne Buckley, Acting Associate Director Food and Patient Support Services.

“Our cleaners and support staff really are part of the backbone of our hospitals. The health system relies on the work they do and we are so lucky to have such a dedicated and hard-working group of cleaners on our team,” said Joel Bardsley, Acting Executive Director, Patient Support Services.

The unsung heroes of health

“Our cleaners and support staff provide an essential service to NSW Health and they are often the unsung heroes of our system. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, our cleaners continued to show up on the frontline every day,” said Jennifer Van Cleef, Acting Chief Executive.

Gregorio Mendellin, the Team Coordinator for Patient Support Services in the Emergency Department at Royal North Shore Hospital, exemplifies the dedication and compassion demonstrated by our cleaning staff.

“There is nothing more satisfying than seeing patients get discharged, happy and thanking you on the way out,” said Gregorio.

“No matter how busy it is in ED, our cleaners ensure that the ward is safe, presentable and well-resourced to ensure patients are getting the best possible care.”

“People come into ED stressed, not well, and with a lot of uncertainty. The protection cleaners bring to patients in ensuring that they do not get an infection while admitted to hospital is a massive task that, as a cleaner in any hospital, we should be extremely proud of.”

Our cleaners have an immeasurable impact on patient care and the health system. To all of our cleaners working diligently to keep us safe, we say a heartfelt thank you, today and every day.
