The HealthShare NSW Internship Program provides students with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a government organisation and apply their academic knowledge and skills to real-world initiatives.
The program runs for 12 months each year, with interns working part-time while hosted by one of many diverse business lines across HealthShare NSW.
Each intern is closely supported by their manager to grow and develop their professional capabilities through valuable mentorship and on-the-job learning, paving the path for their future careers.
Building solid foundations for a future career path
Christine Lee is part of this year’s Internship Program and has been working in the Clinical and Corporate Governance Risk and Safety (CCGRS) directorate.
Reflecting on how her internship has helped her grow, Christine says, ‘Professionally, I’ve developed a stronger understanding of how governance, compliance, and risk management play a crucial role in a large health organisation.
‘I’ve had to step outside of my comfort zone - working on complex projects, engaging with different teams, and applying theory to practice in real-world settings.’
Christine feels that her internship has provided her with a solid foundation for a career in health, policy or governance.
‘The hands-on experience, combined with exposure to such a wide variety of HealthShare NSW’s services, has helped me understand what effective governance looks like in practice. I now feel more prepared to take on roles that require analytical thinking, strong attention to detail, and a systems-based understanding of how different teams and services interconnect,’ said Christine.
In fact, because of her experience in the Internship Program, Christine has been successful in securing a role as a Project Support Officer in Northern Sydney Local Health District.
Sally Whitten, Associate Director, Governance Risk & Compliance, has enjoyed hosting Christine in her team through the program.
‘Having an intern has brought diverse thinking to our team, helped us further develop our success and induction processes and supported team and directorate-wide pieces of work.
‘Christine has brought an organised, planned approach to the work allocated, along with new ideas and co-ordination of work across teams’, said Sally.
Interns add value to teams
Not only does the internship program create a valuable talent pipeline for HealthShare NSW, bringing fresh and diverse talent into the organisation; the interns also make a noticeable impact on their hosting teams.
Darren Brean, Manager, Web Services has been hosting intern Stephanie Boskovski as part of the 2025 Internship Program.
Darren recognises the positive impact that Stephanie has had on his team, saying: ‘Hosting an intern has added clear value by boosting our team's productivity and agility.
‘Stephanie quickly adapted, worked independently, and consistently delivered high-quality results across a range of tasks. Her efficiency and initiative allowed us to progress key work with minimal oversight.
‘Her fresh perspective, enthusiasm, and ability to quickly contribute made a positive impact on the team dynamic and reminded us of the value of mentoring emerging talent,’ said Darren.
An opportunity to gain meaningful, professional experience
When asked what her advice would be to someone considering applying for an internship with HealthShare NSW, Christine said:
‘Don’t hesitate and just apply! This internship gives you access to opportunities and experiences that you simply won’t get from your university studies. You’ll work on meaningful projects, gain exposure to different areas of the health system, and learn from experienced professionals who are genuinely supportive of your development. It’s a fantastic way to explore your interests, build your skills, and do something meaningful.’
Stephanie agrees, saying her internship has been both eye-opening and rewarding.
‘I’ve come to appreciate just how crucial HealthShare NSW is to the public health system and the impact it has on patient care. I’ve been fortunate to join incredibly supportive teams that are committed to my learning, development and goals,’ said Stephanie.
‘If you’re passionate about your studies and eager to explore how you can help improve patient experiences across NSW, I highly encourage you to apply. This internship program is a unique opportunity to grow and make a meaningful difference at the same time.’
Do you know a student who is due to complete their university degree, diploma or advanced diploma in 2026 (or has completed their studies within the last 6 months), and is seeking a hands-on opportunity to learn and develop their professional skills?
